For Read 2 Succeed this coming 2016 Spring semester we will be reading and discussing The Autistic Brain by Temple Grandin. Temple Grandin, Ph.D., is one of the most accomplished and well-known adults with autism in the world. Her  life, with all its challenges and successes, was brought to the screen with the HBO full-length film Temple Grandin, starring Claire Danes. Dr. Grandin has been featured on NPR, and she has a 2010 TED Lecture titled "The World Needs ALL Kinds of Minds." She has also been featured on the BBC special  - The Woman Who Thinks Like a Cow , ABC's - Primetime Live -, - The Today Show - and more. Grandin developed her talents into a successful career as a livestock-handling equipment designer, one of very few in the world. She also speaks on both autism and cattle handling. Dr. Grandin's current bestselling book on autism is The Autistic Brain: Helping Different Kinds of Minds Succeed. She also authored Unwritten Rules of Social Relationships; Animals Make Us Human; Animals in Translation; Thinking in Pictures; and Emergence: Labeled Autistic. Grandin is considered a philosophical leader of both the animal welfare and autism advocacy movements.

Temple Grandin, Ph. D., will be visiting Norco College for a presentation and book signing on April 21st from 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm located in building/room CSS 217.  A live streaming of her presentation will also be available in the CSS upper lounge and at the Wilfred J. Airey Library for those who are not able to enter CSS 217 due to limited seat availability.

Join us on Tuesday May 19th from 12:50 to 1:50 pm in the library for a Poetry Event! Come and listen, or bring a poem and perform with us! Poems may be classics or original works, and should run between 3 - 5 minutes long. Sign up between 12:00 pm & 12:30 pm on performance day in the library to read! Be mindful of your audience when presenting your work when selecting your poem. We hope to see you there!

A  panel of our Puente students will discuss their personal experiences with immigration and other themes presented Reyna Grande’s memoir The Distance Between Us. This Spring the Read 2 Succeed selection is The Distance Between Us,  by award winning author, Reyna Grande. In her book, Ms. Grande recounts the poignant story of her childhood and undocumented immigration from Mexico to the United States. 

Our first interactive book discussion event of the semester will take place on Thursday, March 26 from 12:50-1:50 pm in room CSS 217 Copies of the book are available in the library. Ask us for more details.

The last installment of Read 2 Succeed finishes November 20 from 12:50-1:50 pm in CSS 217 with a Student Veteran Panel, presented by the Norco College Veterans Club. This will be a wonderful opportunity for us to hear firsthand from our own Norco College students who have served in the military, and to learn from their insights and experiences regarding the topic of our book. As always, there will be refreshments and prize giveaways. We'll see you there!

On Thursday, October 30th from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm in CSS 217, come join us for the second installment of our Read 2 Succeed event. Dave Roever, a distinguished Vietnam combat veteran will be here in person to discuss his experiences in conjunction with our Read 2 Succeed book "What it is like to go to War." He will be on hand to sign copies of one of his books which will be available for a donation of $15. There will be prize drawings and refreshments. We hope to see you there!

Did you know that we have a wide selection of textbooks on reserve? 

You can check to see what's available by clicking on the Library Catalog link above, then selecting the 'Course Material' tab. Then enter your three letter course name and number (like MAT 1 or HIS 10) and click 'submit'. Once you know what books and textbooks that we have for you, you can ask for them at Circulation (Front) desk*. These books are available for a two-hour period in the library. 

*Pro Tip: It helps to have the course name, number and the title of the text with you, so that we can easily locate the book you want.

A big thanks to everyone who attended our final Read 2 Succeed event for the semester. There was an amazing turnout, and we especially thank Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston for a great presentation!



And...just in time for finals and last minute projects, we have two brand new group study rooms available, freshly painted and ready to go! Four more rooms are on the way, making for a total of seven study rooms in the library.
